Rewind and Be Kind: Rediscovering Compassion in Modern Times

Chapter 1: Remembering the Video Rental Era
For those who are too young to recall the era of video tape rentals, a brief explanation is in order. Imagine a rectangular device that housed two reels of plastic tape, which was used to store visual content. These tapes were significantly bulkier than today’s smartphones, yet they offered a fraction of the storage capacity and clarity—definitely not in high definition!
Despite their shortcomings, visiting a video rental shop was a unique experience. You would enter an actual store filled with shelves stocked with movies, spanning the latest blockbusters to timeless classics. Some establishments even had a “restricted section” for adult films—though I can assure you I never ventured into those areas!
Upon selecting a movie, you’d find a label instructing, “Be kind, rewind.” This simple phrase served as a thoughtful reminder for the next viewer to rewind the tape, allowing them to enjoy the film immediately without the hassle of rewinding it themselves.
“Be kind, rewind”—what a profound message for such a mundane object!
People from diverse backgrounds encountered this reminder countless times, and while some chose to ignore it, it still prompted a moment of consideration for others. This small act of kindness seems to have faded in our current society.
Could the decline of video rental stores have contributed to the growing lack of consideration among individuals today? We’ve lost a regular prompt to be kind.
It has been suggested that our behavior is shaped by what we focus on, and that repetition can foster habits. Nowadays, we are bombarded with negativity, fear, and distrust, making genuine kindness appear quaint, if not weak.
Increasingly, we find ourselves at odds with one another, often seeking to “own” others in discussions rather than genuinely connecting.
Politics, conspiracy theories, and social discord, fueled by the relentless cycles of social media and news, have left many feeling anxious and exhausted.
If only we could rewind to a time when kindness was more commonplace!
Instead of instantly reacting to conflicting viewpoints with hostility, we could take a moment to reconsider our responses, perhaps even empathizing with the other person's perspective.
Rewinding might reveal compassion within us for those we might have dismissed too quickly.
Despite our differences in political beliefs or opinions, we are still just people. There’s a mix of kindness and malice in every group, and labeling any group as entirely negative is unjust and unproductive.
In my work in healthcare, I interact with individuals from various backgrounds. Some of the most compassionate people I’ve met hold views that contradict my own. And you know what? That’s perfectly acceptable. Disagreement is a normal part of life.
However, the prevailing “us versus them” mentality is abnormal and detrimental.
Political and social divides are tearing communities apart, but there are pathways back to respectful dialogue and collaboration.
One straightforward yet impactful approach is to…
Rewind and be kind!
I’m merely suggesting that we strive to show kindness to others, even those who may irritate us. You don’t have to compromise your beliefs, but finding ways to be considerate can make a difference.
What if someone seemingly unworthy of kindness is in your path? Perhaps extending kindness could be beneficial for your own well-being, regardless of their reaction.
I’ve found that kindness, regardless of my agreement with others, enhances my own mood and peace of mind.
And when someone is aware of their unpleasant behavior, your kindness may leave them bewildered!
A few years back, I read about comedian Sarah Silverman, who responded with unexpected compassion to a troll who insulted her online. Instead of retaliating or blocking him, she paused to learn more about him, discovering he was in significant pain and dealing with anger. She reached out and helped him get the medical attention he needed.
Her simple act of kindness transformed their interaction long before any financial aid was offered.
While we may not all have the resources of a celebrity, we all possess the ability to offer kindness and compassion, which can be incredibly powerful!
Rewind and be kind.
If you disagree with this notion, well, that’s your choice!
