Embracing Technology: A Path Forward for Singapore's SMART Nation

Chapter 1: The Drive Towards a SMART Nation
As we navigate the rapid advancements in technology, Singapore aims to transform into a SMART Nation. It's crucial to understand that our determination to adopt technology is not merely an aspiration; it's an essential step forward.
Recently, there has been a growing concern among some members of the community regarding the government's strong encouragement for citizens to utilize technology for accessing public services. Critics argue that this transition is particularly challenging for older Singaporeans, potentially leaving them behind in the digital age.
An article in TODAY highlighted how ride-hailing services have altered the landscape for taxi drivers, placing older drivers at a disadvantage. The piece noted that many older commuters, who prefer not to use mobile applications, now find themselves stranded as the number of available taxis dwindles.
While these concerns about the shift towards technology are valid, they do not diminish the significant advantages that technological innovations offer. Rather than focusing solely on those who may struggle to adapt, a more pressing question arises: What implications will arise for our society if we collectively resist progress? Technological advancement is inevitable, and as it transforms every aspect of our lives, any hesitation in our adoption can be detrimental to Singapore's competitiveness on the global stage.
Section 1.1: Understanding Technology Adoption
The technology adoption lifecycle outlines consumer behavior in relation to new products or features, categorizing individuals into five groups: innovators (2.5%), early adopters (13.5%), early majority (34%), late majority (34%), and laggards (16%).
Given these categories, I contend that we should not allow the 16% of laggards to dictate the pace for the remaining 84% of society. The user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) of contemporary technology are designed to be intuitive, making it accessible to a broad audience. Except for those in advanced age who may struggle with cognitive challenges, I believe that individuals who refuse to embrace technology are exhibiting a sense of entitlement, expecting society to maintain the status quo.

Section 1.2: Adaptation in Business
Regarding the taxi drivers mentioned in the TODAY article, I must admit that I feel little empathy for those who resist change. Operating a business requires adaptation to evolving circumstances. Those who choose not to innovate or grow their business model must accept the consequences of their decisions.
Chapter 2: The Importance of Progress
This video titled "Leave No Man Behind" examines the critical need for inclusivity in technological advancement, emphasizing the importance of ensuring no one is left out as we progress.
The second video, "Leave No Man Behind Task Guide For Gray Zone Warfare," provides a comprehensive overview of strategic approaches to ensure collective progress in an ever-evolving technological landscape.
