Exciting Developments: Apple's New 7K Display on the Horizon

Written on

Introduction to Apple's Display Evolution

In 2019 during WWDC, Apple made waves with the introduction of the Mac Pro, accompanied by its impressive 6K Pro Display XDR. This was a highly anticipated release, as fans had been waiting years for a new display from Apple.

Fast forward three years, and after the launch of the Studio Display, Apple appears ready to unveil an upgraded version—a 7K display designed to replace the now-aging Pro Display XDR. Here’s what we know so far.

An Overview of Apple's 2022 Achievements

Apple's 2022 was marked by significant advancements. During the first event of the year, the Peek Event, Apple introduced a new Mac and the Studio Display—its first new monitor in a while. This more affordable alternative filled a gap in Apple's offerings, providing an option for those who desire an Apple monitor without needing the premium features of the XDR.

However, with the Pro Display XDR quickly falling behind, there’s a clear need for an upgrade for users seeking a high-end monitor.

The Anticipated New Display

The current Pro Display XDR boasts a 32-inch screen with a 6K resolution and peaks at a brightness of 1,600 nits, supporting HDR for enhanced visuals. The anticipated new model will feature a larger 36-inch screen and a 7K resolution, maintaining pixel density—an essential aspect for Apple.

Additionally, the new display is expected to incorporate the "ProMotion" technology seen in many of Apple's latest devices. This would allow for a refresh rate of up to 120 Hertz. However, it remains unclear whether this will be an adaptive feature, similar to the iPhone 13 models, or a constant refresh rate, which may not be as beneficial for a display.

Moreover, like the Studio Display, this new model might include an internal chip with a neural engine, possibly the A13 or an upgraded version. This would enhance audio performance with spatial audio support and improve the camera capabilities with features like “Center Stage,” contributing to an overall superior display experience.

While the peak brightness is likely to remain at 1,600 nits, the contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 is expected to persist, along with the impressive wide viewing angles of the current model.

Pricing and Expected Release

Initially, there were expectations that the new display would launch alongside the upgraded Mac Pro at the previous WWDC. However, this did not occur, and the announcement has been postponed.

We anticipate that the new display will be revealed during the upcoming October event, promising to be a major highlight. Industry insider Mark Gurman suggested that Apple may introduce a monitor priced at roughly half of the current Pro Display XDR, which retails for $4,999. Thus, we might see the new display priced around $2,500, although this figure could align more closely with the expected price of the Studio Display.

Gurman believes that declining production costs for monitors over the years could justify this more affordable price point.

Conclusion and Personal Insights

Apple’s commitment to enhancing its display lineup this year is commendable. The success of the new display will largely hinge on its pricing strategy. With numerous upgrades and improvements on the table, a fair price could make this new monitor a valuable addition for many users, especially since the current XDR is already performing well in the market.
