Understanding the Mechanics of Decision Making
Having participated in a Life Coaching program, I can confidently say that what I'm about to share could transform your approach to decision making. This method is foundational in life coaching and is highly regarded by professionals in the field. It’s no secret that our lives consist of a series of choices. Every moment, we are engaged in decisions that shape our futures. Simple choices, such as waking up early or committing to a healthy lifestyle, are clear examples. While these decisions are straightforward, what happens when you encounter complex situations without a guiding principle? What if I told you there is a hidden formula at your disposal? This formula is rooted in understanding something known as baselines.
Section 1.1: What Are Baselines?
When I mention "baseline," it may sound like an unfamiliar term. However, you’ve been living your life influenced by these baselines all along. To clarify, a baseline is a fundamental quality or set of values that you refuse to compromise on. For instance, if honesty is a core value for you, you wouldn’t sacrifice it, even if it meant jeopardizing your job. This concept also explains our varied reactions in different situations, which arise from our unique baselines. Imagine the impact of understanding someone else's baselines. Knowing your partner’s baselines could help you avoid unnecessary conflicts, while being aware of your boss’s baselines could shape your performance review.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Formation of Baselines
The formation of these baselines typically occurs during formative years, influenced by family, friends, and educational experiences. Understanding how they develop can empower you to make decisions that align with your authentic self.
Section 1.2: The Importance of Identifying Your Baselines
Although you may believe in numerous baselines, focusing on your top six is crucial. Rather than adhering to the vague notion that thoughts lead to feelings, and feelings to actions, knowing your baselines allows you to understand how your thoughts can be processed mindfully. This clarity enables you to take responsibility for your feelings, whether positive or negative, and ensures that your decisions serve your best interests.
Chapter 2: Steps to Discover Your Core Values
To identify your top six baselines, follow these steps:
- Create a Comprehensive List: Begin by jotting down approximately 50 things that hold importance to you, from personal values to aspirations. Allow your thoughts to flow freely.
- Refine Your List: Review your list and eliminate half of the items. Retain only those that resonate most with you.
- Narrow Down to Core Values: From the remaining items, select around 15 that truly represent your essence. Ensure these align with your values and long-term goals.
- Identify Your Top Six Values: Finally, choose the six values that are most significant to you. These will guide your decisions and reflect what you stand for. The sequence in which you prioritize them is also essential.

Applying Your Baselines in Real Scenarios
Consider a situation where you must choose between a high-paying job that drains your spirit and pursuing a passion that may not be as lucrative. By referencing your top six baselines—such as integrity, personal growth, making a difference, learning, connection, and happiness—you can evaluate each option and select the path that aligns with your values.
Identifying and prioritizing your core baselines is a transformative process that fosters genuine decision making. By starting broad and honing in, you gain clarity on what matters most to you. These baselines act as your guiding compass, leading you to choices that are authentic, meaningful, and fulfilling.
