# Three Key Reasons I Would Avoid Employment at an Apple Store

Written on

Chapter 1: Personal Preferences and Work Environments

As someone who values solitude and tends to be introverted, I make it a point to visit busy places like stores during off-peak hours. Recently, I had to go to the Apple store, which is about five miles from my home. I planned my visit for 10:15 AM, just 15 minutes after opening, hoping to dodge the crowds. Unfortunately, I found the store already filled with people (see the image below). While waiting for assistance, I realized that working in such an environment would be completely unsuitable for me. Here are my top three reasons.

First, I would resist wearing a uniform that aligns me with the other thirty employees. I identify as an individualist, and the thought of donning a corporate-mandated shirt is unappealing. I also avoid clothing with logos or brand names like Nike or Hurley. Why should I pay to promote a brand’s image? Shouldn’t they be compensating me for that?

Second, I find crowds overwhelming, and Apple stores are notoriously busy. As an introvert, being surrounded by many people depletes my energy. After just 15 minutes in a crowded space, I start to feel anxious and in dire need of fresh air and personal space. If I were to work at an Apple store, I’d likely need to step outside every quarter of an hour to recharge, maybe even retreating to my car for a brief respite. I can’t imagine my supervisor would appreciate this habit, and I’d probably find myself without a job before the day was out.

Third, I harbor a strong aversion to large corporations like Apple, which seem to prioritize profit over the well-being of their employees. These companies often appear indifferent to their staff, failing to recognize the individuals behind the Apple shirts they distribute. If Apple or any similar corporation decides to make cuts, they will do so without a second thought for your financial stability or living situation; their primary concern is their profit margins.

As you can see, I thrive as a freelance writer and proofreader. I enjoy the freedom to choose my attire, set my breaks, and decide when to have lunch—free from corporate constraints. Just me, without a boss or a corporation dictating my choices.

Can you envision yourself thriving in an Apple Store or another large corporate setting?
