# Embracing Your Role as One of God's "Doers"

Written on

Chapter 1: The Call to Action

In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus shares vital guidance that remains incredibly relevant today. Let’s examine these verses from the New International Version.

Jesus stated in Luke 10:1, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest field." The Greek term for “workers” is ergates, which can also mean “those who do.” I find this term inspiring—Doers—individuals who act upon their prayers and embody the teachings they follow.

But what does the harvest field represent? The subsequent verses provide clarity. In verse 3, Jesus commands, “Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.”

Does that resonate with you? Can you relate it to your workplace, school, or community group? These environments are indeed your harvest fields! They are the places where you can make a significant impact, even among those who seem indifferent or unkind.

Many envision evangelism as grand events with charismatic speakers or altar calls at church. However, the most effective form of evangelism often occurs through friends influencing friends—or even acquaintances.

An evangelist once recounted an experience where a young woman approached him during a church service. She sought prayer for a new job, expressing that she was the only believer at her workplace, surrounded by inappropriate language and behavior. The evangelist humorously prayed for her release from the command to "go into all the world and preach the Gospel," making a poignant point.

The truth is, the world won’t embrace the Gospel if we only associate with fellow Christians. We are called to venture into the darkness and share God’s light. This is the path through which many may come to know the Lord.

Reflecting on the testimonies of prominent ministers reveals a common theme: someone persisted in loving and praying for them. Thus, don't let initial appearances dictate your actions.

How do we navigate these challenging environments? Let’s examine the next verses.

In verse 4, Jesus instructs, “Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; do not greet anyone on the road.” This directive emphasizes total reliance on Him. When you depend on the Holy Spirit, you’re attuned to His guidance rather than the opinions of others.

To truly be a Doer for God, it’s essential to listen for His instructions and not be constrained by worldly methods or logic. Trust in His Spirit for guidance and provision.

This is crucial, as relying solely on natural instincts may lead to retaliatory behavior against those who mistreat you. Instead, God may prompt you to respond with patience and sprinkle His love and forgiveness even on those who are difficult.

In verse 16, Jesus conveys, “Whoever listens to you listens to Me; whoever rejects you rejects Me; but whoever rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” As Doers, we learn not to take rejection to heart. Those who turn away are often influenced by darker forces. But if the Holy Spirit urges you to extend more love and grace, do so.

Return kindness for hostility and goodness for evil.

As Jesus sends out the seventy disciples equipped with His authority, they return with remarkable reports of healing and deliverance in His name. Jesus rejoices, seeing Satan’s downfall—a powerful reminder of the ultimate victory over evil.

Now, consider Jesus' words in verse 21: “I praise you, Father, Lord of Heaven and Earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.”

The seventy disciples were not necessarily wise or scholarly; they were ordinary individuals. Why is this significant? Humility is essential in God's kingdom. Only those willing to listen to Him can truly represent Him on earth.

The wise often resist teaching, preferring to rely solely on their understanding. Their pride can obstruct what God seeks to accomplish through them.

God desires individuals willing to be taught, those who recognize their need for His guidance. These are the ones He empowers and sends forth.

Allow God to lead you in your journey as a Doer of His Word. He will provide direction and affirm it through His teachings. As you draw closer to your Heavenly Father through worship, you will become more attuned to His voice and His will for your life.

The future is bright for believers, with many opportunities to share the message of Jesus and to demonstrate what it means to walk with Him.

If you feel uncertain about this calling, that may be a positive sign. Immerse yourself in God’s Word, allowing it to shape your thoughts. Seek wisdom from your Heavenly Father and let His Spirit guide you.

Commit to being a Doer of the Word, acting upon the revelations you receive.

That’s the life I aspire to live. How about you?

Yes, Lord, send me.
