Staying Fit for 20 Years: My Journey Beyond Six-Pack Abs
Written on
Chapter 1: My Fitness Journey
Since I began my fitness journey at 17, I've dedicated two decades to exercising regularly. Remarkably, I can still fit into my first suit from college. While I may not resemble an Instagram fitness influencer, I find the fixation on appearance baffling. It's essential to recognize that being healthy and fit doesn't necessitate having six-pack abs.
In my teenage years, I battled with my weight. However, once I understood the importance of emotional rewards in my routine, I successfully maintained my weight while enhancing my strength and endurance.
This emotional connection is vital for consistency in workouts. Engaging in small, enjoyable activities daily helps me remain committed, even during the busier moments in life.
My approach to fitness is straightforward, and I have never adhered to any complex scientific guidelines. I believe simplicity often trumps the pursuit of perfection. I typically exercise four to five times a week, alternating between cardio and strength training, but I never combine both on the same day. I always leave my workouts feeling energized rather than exhausted.
On days when I can't make it to the gym, I opt for a 30 to 60-minute walk. Even when fatigue sets in from sitting all day, I push myself to take that walk, and invariably, I feel better afterward.
Know Your "Why"
Understanding your motivation is crucial. If you exercise for the right reasons, you're more likely to sustain your efforts and find fulfillment in the process. Pursuing fitness for superficial goals may lead to disappointment, as your true motivation will often be the only factor driving you when enthusiasm wanes.
Ultimately, remember that your fitness journey is for your benefit. As Epictetus wisely asked, "How long are you going to wait before you demand the best for yourself?" This philosophy encourages us to strive for our best selves, reinforcing that physical strength is foundational to enjoying life fully.
If you're fortunate enough to read this, recognize the privilege you hold. Use that advantage to chase your fitness aspirations.
Relying on Internal Competition
Let go of the urge to compare yourself with fitness influencers or the athletic individuals at your gym. This journey is uniquely yours, and the only competition that matters is between you and yourself. Internal competition is a powerful motivator, allowing for personalized growth rather than adherence to external standards.
Why is this approach effective? Social media often fosters unhealthy comparisons, which can be discouraging. Instead, concentrate on your progress. When was the last time you engaged in a cardio workout? If it's been a while, start small. Perhaps initiate short daily walks for a week before gradually progressing to jogging or running.
For strength training, assess how frequently you've been lifting weights. If you're already consistent, you know your limits and suitable exercises. If not, it's time to delve into learning more about it.
By focusing on internal benchmarks, you can customize your fitness journey in a way that aligns with your personal goals. This approach frees you from the limitations of trying to meet others' expectations.
You'll Be Surprised by Your Capabilities
One profound realization is that you are capable of accomplishing challenging tasks. Embracing the fact that achieving an easier life often requires undertaking difficult actions is essential.
Establishing daily habits is powerful; repetition ingrains behaviors into our minds, making them second nature. Marcus Aurelius expressed this beautifully: "The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way."
Each moment you dedicate to your objectives paves the way for future success. So, commit to the process, put in the effort, and above all, allow yourself to take pride in overcoming challenges.
