Navigating Summer: Sobriety and Celebrations Hand in Hand

The Summer Drinking Dilemma
Ah, summer — a season often filled with relaxation and easy living. But is this the time when your alcohol intake begins to rise? I can admit that mine certainly did.
The annual Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco marks the unofficial start of summer for many, including me. For years, I participated in this iconic event, initially running when I was in good shape. However, after my knees gave out, my sister and I opted for a leisurely 7.5-mile walk instead. The post-race celebration was always a highlight, but let's be honest: the party often kicked off well before we reached the finish line.
While I tended to hold off on drinking until later, many participants began their festivities right at the start. After the race, Michele and I would settle down at our favorite restaurant with a view of the bay, ordering margaritas to toast the season ahead.
For some, summer festivities might begin with baseball games, barbecues, pool parties, or graduation celebrations. What’s your go-to summer kickoff? Or do the long sunny days and warm nights serve as the perfect excuse to start the celebration early?
A study from the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs reveals that alcohol consumption tends to peak during summer, second only to the holiday season. Understanding the risks and consequences of binge drinking is crucial to ensuring a safe and enjoyable summer.
Understanding Binge Drinking
Binge drinking is defined as consuming a significant amount of alcohol in a short timeframe. For women, this means four or more drinks, while men are classified as binge drinkers after five or more drinks within two hours.

Dangers of Summer Drinking
The combination of rising temperatures and typical summer activities can lead to severe consequences when paired with binge drinking. Here’s how:
- Memory Blackouts: Binge drinking can lead to gaps in memory, known as blackouts. While blackouts themselves might not be dangerous, they can lead to risky behaviors, such as driving under the influence. The Department of Transportation highlights that the 4th of July is one of the most dangerous holidays, with 39% of fatal crashes involving alcohol.
- Dehydration and Heat Stroke: The heat combined with alcohol consumption can cause fluid loss, leading to dehydration. Contrary to popular belief, alcoholic beverages do not hydrate the body. Instead, they lead to increased urination and a loss of fluids through sweating, which can result in dehydration and, in severe cases, heat stroke. Symptoms like dizziness and nausea can mimic drunkenness, making diagnosis tricky.
- Alcohol Poisoning: This serious condition occurs when blood alcohol levels reach a dangerous threshold. The body absorbs alcohol faster than it can process it, which can lead to the shutdown of vital systems, including those regulating temperature and breathing, potentially resulting in death.
The CDC warns of the long-term health risks associated with binge drinking, such as liver disease, high blood pressure, heart complications, cancer, and memory issues. While binge drinking can occur at any time, the festive outdoor atmosphere of summer often invites overindulgence.
Tips for a Safe Summer
- Stay hydrated with water or other non-alcoholic beverages, especially outdoors.
- Bring along your favorite non-alcoholic drink to gatherings.
- Engage in activities that don’t revolve around drinking.
- Politely decline offers of alcohol without feeling the need to justify your choice.
- Seek support from friends and family.
This summer marks my sixth season of sobriety, and I’ve found that not drinking has become second nature. I always carry a non-alcoholic drink and make sure my friends are aware of my choice. When meeting new people, a simple “no thank you” suffices.
For those who choose to drink, planning is essential. Eat beforehand, monitor your alcohol intake, and pace yourself. Establish a limit on how many drinks you’ll have and arrange for a safe way to get home, whether through a designated driver or a rideshare service.
With careful preparation, you can enjoy a summer filled with cherished memories, surrounded by friends and family — all while remaining alcohol-conscious or even alcohol-free. Remembering every wonderful moment is worth it.
Your safety, and potentially that of others, depends on your choices. Enjoy summer responsibly!
