Life can feel overwhelming. The pressures we face, the duties we must uphold, and the heart-wrenching experiences we endure can accumulate, making existence feel heavy. Additionally, the constant stream of information we consume adds to this burden.

At the close of the previous year, I found myself feeling more weighed down than ever. I had recently experienced a painful breakup and was caught between two teaching positions—one requiring an hour-long commute and the other plagued by toxicity. The uncertainty about my career, along with the remnants of a broken heart, stripped away the lightness of life. Happiness felt elusive.

During this challenging period, I came to a crucial realization: I needed to unlearn harmful habits that contributed to my unhappiness—habits that obstructed my path to peace and joy. Thus began my quest for practices that would help lighten my journey.

To facilitate this shift, I turned to books and sought out YouTube videos from creators sharing valuable insights. From this exploration, I embraced the following transformative practices:

Section 1.1: The Power of Speaking Less

The first and perhaps most challenging practice I adopted was to speak less. I recognized that reducing my verbal output could significantly alter my life, and indeed, it has.

Speaking less involves more than merely curtailing the number of words I say; it encompasses listening more attentively and being mindful of my speech. I learned that once words leave my mouth, they cannot be taken back, and not everyone deserves to hear what I have to say.

How can you incorporate the practice of speaking less? Whenever faced with the choice to listen or speak, opt for listening.

There are myriad benefits to listening more than speaking. You'll gain knowledge, minimize regrets, conserve energy, and foster a sense of being understood in others. The more you listen, the more others will listen to you when you do speak.

Listening is a superpower that requires practice, patience, and strength. Once you cultivate this skill, life can feel lighter and more manageable.

In moments of fatigue or distraction, it’s essential to recognize when to speak less. I once found myself on a call with a friend, realizing I was not fully engaged in the conversation. I apologized and ended the call, proud of my self-awareness and boundary-setting.

When you become attuned to your speech, you choose your words with greater care, positively impacting your life and those around you.

Section 1.2: The Importance of Word Control

This principle builds on the previous one: understanding that what you say cannot be unsaid is vital. Even when we feel confident, we may say things we later regret.

This doesn't mean we should censor ourselves entirely; expressing ourselves with confidence and vulnerability is important. However, we must always remember the permanence of our words.

Not everyone is entitled to hear what you have to say. Many interactions lack balance—this could stem from our disengagement or the other person's lack of effort. In such cases, speaking less can foster deeper connections and help you appreciate the good in life by being more present.

Chapter 2: Seeking Positivity Amidst Challenges

Section 2.1: Finding the Good

The second practice I adopted is actively looking for the good in every situation. This isn’t mere positive thinking; it’s a conscious effort to seek the silver lining, even in seemingly dire circumstances.

Last summer, I faced a life-altering heartbreak that shifted my entire existence. Just two days before a planned trip to Hawaii, the relationship ended. I went on the trip, but the pain was palpable.

During the flight, I felt an overwhelming sense of loss, as if I were experiencing multiple deaths at once. That painful journey forced me to confront my emotions, leading to a necessary transformation. I realized that experiencing this pain was essential for my rebirth.

Looking for the good isn't about suppressing feelings or ignoring discomfort; it’s about aligning with reality and extracting lessons from every experience. This practice cultivates gratitude and a lighter spirit.

Section 2.2: The Power of Gratitude

Expressing gratitude is the third practice I’ve embraced. While I had previously acknowledged gratitude, I had not consistently prioritized it. Now, I intentionally express gratitude daily and witness its profound effects.

Gratitude isn't just a buzzword; it holds transformative power. Each morning, I take a moment to appreciate my home, community, and the basic necessities of life.

When I connect with nature, I express thanks for its beauty and interconnectedness. This practice enhances my outdoor experiences and shifts my perspective on life.

Since committing to a daily gratitude practice, I've found life becoming more manageable and rewarding. These practices may not yield immediate results, but they contribute to a sustained sense of balance and fulfillment.

As I integrate these practices into my life, I acknowledge that challenges will continue to arise. However, I now understand that our response to these challenges can make all the difference.
