The iPhone 14 Review: An Underwhelming Upgrade

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to the iPhone 14

As Techtember draws to a close, we continue our reviews during this thrilling season. Having already explored the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max—highlighting features like the Dynamic Island, Crash Detection, and Satellite Connectivity—it's now time to examine the iPhone 14. Unfortunately, this model doesn't bring the same excitement as its Pro siblings. In fact, it closely resembles last year’s iPhone.

Let’s dive into the details, shall we?

The blue variant is particularly striking, but it also comes in purple, midnight, starlight, and product (red). The design mirrors that of the iPhone 13, featuring the same materials, camera setup, display, and dimensions. Water and splash resistance remain unchanged, and the weight is identical to its predecessor.

Even the internal components show little variation. The iPhone 14 continues to utilize the A15 Bionic chip from last year, maintaining the same battery capacity, storage choices, brightness levels, and Lightning port. Essentially, think of it as an iPhone 13 Pro encased in an iPhone 14 shell.

Chapter 2: What's New?

So, what does the iPhone 14 bring to the table? Compared to the Pro models, it lacks ProMotion technology with its 120 Hz refresh rate and the always-on display, which improves visibility in bright conditions. Apple missed a significant opportunity to include a 120 Hz refresh rate, which could have set it apart and allowed it to compete with many mid-range Android devices that have already adopted this feature.

Additional features include:

  • Crash Detection
  • Emergency Satellite Connectivity
  • eSIM support
  • Updated primary camera
  • Enhanced front camera

Section 2.1: Crash Detection Explained

“Even if it doesn't seem apparent, multiple sensors work together within the iPhone to ensure effective crash detection. This feature identifies if you've been in an accident, and if you fail to respond to alerts on your screen, your iPhone will initiate Emergency SOS.” — Jay Stories [iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max Review]

Section 2.2: Emergency Satellite Connectivity

In short, if you find yourself in an area with no cellular coverage and need assistance, the iPhone 14 can connect via satellite to reach emergency services. This feature will be available in the United States and Canada starting November of this year—yet another capability I hope you never need to utilize. — Jay Stories [iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max Review]

The introduction of eSIM means that the new iPhones no longer feature a physical SIM card tray, a change that currently applies only in the United States.

Section 2.3: Camera Updates

The new iPhone boasts a 12-megapixel primary camera with super wide-angle (0.5x) and wide-angle (1x) capabilities, featuring improved sensors for better light intake. Additionally, the front-facing camera has also been upgraded to 12 megapixels with autofocus.

But how noticeable are the differences in photo quality between the iPhone 13 and 14? In optimal lighting conditions, the differences are minimal, though the iPhone 14 may perform slightly better in low-light situations, requiring keen observation to spot the distinctions.

Chapter 3: Performance Analysis

The iPhone 14 feels reminiscent of Apple's strategy with the iPhone SE, featuring a familiar design with some internal upgrades. Geekbench 5 results indicate that the performance of the iPhone 14 is quite similar to that of the iPhone 13 Pro Max, as they share the same processor and GPU cores. Picture it as an iPhone 13 Pro inside an iPhone 14 casing.

Chapter 4: Conclusion

It’s unfortunate to produce a brief review of a device as remarkable as the iPhone. This year, Apple has adopted a rather perplexing strategy that is, in my opinion, somewhat disappointing. Evaluating the iPhone 14 independently reveals a robust device, yet the challenge arises when considering its predecessor, which offers nearly identical features. The differences between these two models are not as significant or apparent for the average Apple user.

Would I recommend this iPhone? My response varies based on your starting point. If you own an iPhone 8, X, or 11, I'd suggest considering the iPhone 14. However, if you're coming from an iPhone 12 or 13, I'd advise against upgrading, as it may not be worth it.

iPhone 14 comparison with previous models

Upon reflection, even for those upgrading from older models, I might still recommend the iPhone 13. Why? Primarily because it remains available in the Apple store for $699, whereas the iPhone 14 starts at $799, with only minor differences between them.

The iPhone 14 is indeed a solid phone, but its improvements are marginal. The gap between entry-level models and Pro variants widens yearly, raising questions about the implications for users and the company alike.

See you in the next review.

Peace.
