The essence of who we are is tied to our beliefs. External judgments, whether from ourselves or others, are merely subjective interpretations influenced by personal observations. These perceptions can shape our self-image, but they don’t define our entirety.
The words and labels we encounter can heavily impact us, yet maintaining belief in these labels demands continuous effort. Whether we actively seek validation for the identities we are assigned or unconsciously conform to certain behaviors, it takes significant energy to cling to these beliefs.
While it's perfectly natural to feel secure in a familiar version of ourselves, it's crucial to understand that we are defined by our beliefs, which means we have the power to evolve if we choose.
By recognizing this, we can approach the aspects of ourselves that hold us back without feeling trapped and begin to envision possibilities beyond our current limitations. Moreover, we can expand our identities by acknowledging our capacity for transformation.
Shonda Rhimes encapsulates this sentiment beautifully: "You can waste your lives drawing lines. Or you can live your life crossing them."
