The Explosive Lake That Powers a Community
In a race against time to preserve our planet from a self-inflicted apocalypse, we are shifting away from outdated oil-based technologies and adopting renewable sources like solar, wind, nuclear, and geothermal energy. However, a small town in Rwanda, situated alongside Lake Kivu, has an unconventional power source: a lake that could potentially explode, yet provides them with clean energy. How does this work? What makes this lake so dangerous, and can we replicate this technology elsewhere?
The Geology Behind Lake Kivu
The unique geological setting of Lake Kivu is intriguing. The Earth's crust is being stretched by tectonic forces, leading to the formation of deep lakes and volcanic eruptions. This geological interplay contributes to the lake's hazardous nature.
At the depths of Lake Kivu, methane and carbon dioxide are released from volcanic activity beneath the earth's surface. These gases don't escape to the surface; instead, they dissolve in the water. Unlike a typical lake, where currents mix the water layers, Lake Kivu’s significant depth creates a sharp thermocline, resulting in a cold, dense lower layer that remains separate from the warmer, oxygen-rich upper layer.
The Implications of Gas Accumulation
This stratification means that gases from the volcanic activity cannot escape, leading to a buildup in the lower layer. The cold temperatures and high pressure at these depths enable the water to hold an excessive amount of dissolved gases. Consequently, the bottom layer has become supersaturated with methane and carbon dioxide, much like a shaken soda can, ready to explode. Currently, it holds over 60 billion tonnes of methane that has accumulated over centuries. A minor disturbance could trigger a catastrophic release of these gases, posing a serious threat to the surrounding areas.

A Community's Response to Danger
The residents living near Lake Kivu recognized the risk of this ticking time bomb and took action. They constructed deep pipes to pump water from the lower layer to the surface, allowing the gases to escape and significantly reducing the risk of an eruption.
During this process, they discovered that the methane being released is a powerful greenhouse gas, but it also serves as a valuable energy source. This realization led to the creation of a power station powered by the methane, which not only provides energy for the community but also mitigates the lake's potential environmental impact by converting methane into carbon dioxide. With an abundant supply of methane available, this power station has the potential to operate for decades.
KivuWatt: A Sustainable Solution
In 2016, the KivuWatt power plant commenced operations, generating 25 MW of electricity—sufficient to power around 45,000 residents, all sourced from the methane extracted from the lake.
Although the plant emits carbon dioxide, it is considered carbon neutral because the volcanic gases would have naturally entered the atmosphere regardless. This system merely manages the release, contrasting with conventional natural gas plants that extract fossil fuels from the earth, thereby introducing additional carbon into the atmosphere.

Integrating into the Natural Carbon Cycle
KivuWatt effectively contributes to the natural carbon cycle, emitting only the carbon that would have been released anyway. This innovative approach not only prevents a potential environmental disaster from Lake Kivu but also offers guilt-free energy to tens of thousands of people.
While the unique geological features of Lake Kivu may not be replicable in other locations, this remarkable solution demonstrates the power of creative thinking in addressing climate challenges. KivuWatt serves as a crucial reminder that simple yet ingenious ideas can significantly impact our collective fight against climate change.
