Finding True Contentment: Peace Over Pleasure
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Peace and Pleasure
Can one truly experience both peace and pleasure simultaneously? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes peace as “a state of tranquility or quiet, such as freedom from civil disturbance or a state of security or order within a community provided by law or custom.” This notion encapsulates a freedom that liberates us from fear and oppressive thoughts, filling our spirit with a profound sense of contentment.
For me, peace embodies a calm state of mind, guiding both my thoughts and physical well-being. On the other hand, pleasure is described as “a desire, an inclination of one’s pleasure. A state of gratification. Sensual gratification. Frivolous amusement.” It represents a diverse array of experiences unique to each individual, much like our distinct identities.
Our desires differ, reflective of our personal visions for an ideal life. Many equate pleasure with material possessions—luxury vehicles, vacation homes, and lavish lifestyles. However, it’s crucial to differentiate these desires from the fundamental needs necessary for survival. While some pursue opulence, others may find joy in a more modest existence. Neither perspective is inherently wrong.
In 2008, my life underwent a significant transformation. I had enjoyed a middle-class lifestyle up to that point, complete with various luxuries: a spacious home, an RV for family trips, a sailboat, and sufficient income to manage our expenses. Yet, that year brought unprecedented challenges as the housing market collapsed, compounded by a divorce.
This crisis shattered the stability I had known. My income alone could no longer cover the mortgage, and my ex-partner refused to assist financially. To protect our home from foreclosure, I made the difficult decision to relocate with my children and our dog to a smaller property. Despite downsizing, I felt fortunate to avoid homelessness.
This marked the beginning of my journey toward discovering peace over pleasure. As our financial resources dwindled, I had to sell the RV and sailboat, leading us to a life of tight budgets. My ex’s refusal to pay child support and his contempt for our situation only added to the turmoil, leading to threats against my safety.
Amidst the loss of material possessions, I gradually realized that I had never truly experienced peace. These challenges served as a poignant reminder that belongings are transient; our health and inner tranquility are paramount for survival. Although I once enjoyed temporary pleasures, it was through my struggles that I unearthed my resilience and found lasting peace.
Every individual will confront challenges throughout their lives, with some facing more severe trials than others. As a woman who once reveled in luxury, I can confidently affirm that a state of permanent peace is far more valuable than any wealth.
My experiences echo the story of "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas." Much like the Grinch, who endeavored to ruin Christmas for the Whos of Whoville but ultimately failed, I too found that true joy lies within, irrespective of external circumstances.
While I can’t claim my ex’s heart grew significantly, I remain hopeful. Ultimately, mindset is everything. I would choose peace over pleasure any day.
If you appreciated this reflection, I would be thankful for your support of my writings!
