Chapter 1: Introduction to Scott Ahlsmith
Hello, fellow travel enthusiasts! My name is Scott Ahlsmith, and I am honored to share a bit about myself with you all.
What does the designation CTC mean?
CTC stands for Certified Travel Counselor, a title awarded by The Travel Institute, an esteemed non-profit organization in the travel sector. I had the privilege of serving as its Past Chairman and remain active on its Board of Directors.
My journey began in the heart of Iowa, located in the central United States. After numerous stops in cities such as Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, San Francisco, and Santa Barbara, I eventually settled in the Pacific Northwest.
My professional background includes roles as a retired travel agent, trip director, tour operator, agency owner, travel technologist, entrepreneur, sommelier, and writer.
Chapter 2: The Joy of Travel
Traveling excites me because it fosters personal growth. Each journey opens my mind, fuels my curiosity, and broadens my understanding of the world, helping me to embrace change rather than fear stagnation.
Unlike those who merely seek a new view, I prefer to explore diverse locations, constantly seeking fresh experiences.
The highlight of my travels?
Without a doubt, the South Island of New Zealand ranks as my favorite destination. Despite my American accent marking me as a foreigner, I was warmly welcomed everywhere I went.
I remember entering a pub where locals generously offered to buy me a beer, and I rarely found myself dining alone; strangers often invited me to their homes for a meal. The Kiwis I encountered were wonderfully spontaneous and filled with humor, making every moment memorable—though the sheep I met were less than calm!
During one visit to a shearing shed, I found myself hilariously attempting to shear a sheep, much to the amusement of the professionals nearby. Luckily, the sheep survived my clumsy efforts!
Chapter 3: Travel Preferences and Tips
In my leisure time, I enjoy packing my rugged Filson carry-on suitcase, which, despite its high price, comes with a lifetime guarantee—this is my third one!
Each day, I strive to capture at least one photo of something or someone I hadn't noticed before, and I work on honing my sourdough baking skills.
My ultimate travel advice?
Embrace the unexpected! Some of my best travel stories have emerged from unforeseen and uncontrollable situations.
If I could choose a new home, it would be a cozy cabin in the woods, conveniently close to a train station.
When I travel, I prefer a minimalist itinerary—just my departure and arrival times and a reservation for the first night's stay. My curiosity serves as my guide, while my camera documents the sights and my notebook captures the sensations of smell, sound, taste, and touch.
Chapter 4: Lessons Learned from Travel
Three vital lessons I've learned from my adventures include:
- Create magical moments for yourself and others whenever possible.
- Study and respect the cultural traditions of each place you visit.
- Never leave a destination wondering, "What if I…?"
My favorite travel activity?
I love exploring the unique aromas of local markets. When I was training for my sommelier certification, my instructor emphasized the importance of smell, stating that the memories associated with scents linger longer and more vividly. For me, understanding a destination begins and ends with the delightful smells found in its markets.
