Empowering Ethical Selling: Redefining the Sales Experience

Written on

Chapter 1: The Modern Womanpreneur

The term "womanpreneur" has become increasingly popular, especially on social media platforms like Instagram, where it's used extensively. While I acknowledge the rise of this concept, I prefer not to be labeled as such. It feels like an attempt to categorize me, simplifying my identity for the sake of content aimed at helping women thrive in business. Sure, it's commendable that women are launching their ventures, but there’s more to the story.

The most daunting aspect of being a female entrepreneur is undoubtedly sales. I was unprepared for the pressure that comes with it!

In an ideal world, the archetypal womanpreneur would be effortlessly closing deals, making it seem almost effortless. Meanwhile, I find myself overwhelmed at the thought of sales, which often feels uncomfortable and forced.

Where I Struggled

Growing up as a member of Generation X with a baby boomer mother, I developed a strong aversion to causing discomfort for others. My upbringing emphasized politeness and a desire to be agreeable, which unfortunately translated into a fear of asking people to make purchases. This mindset, instilled by my mother, was deeply rooted in avoiding any form of inconvenience to others, especially when it came to spending money.

This conditioning became a significant hurdle when I began my entrepreneurial journey. I realized that my reluctance to engage in sales stemmed from a desire to avoid being perceived as pushy.

Pushy Salespeople: A Negative Stereotype

The stereotype of the aggressive salesperson exists for a reason; many of us have encountered someone who pushed too hard. I remember a particular experience with a young car salesman who was overly friendly, using flattery and even ordering pizza to create an impression of care. Yet, his tactics ended up costing us more than we had anticipated, leaving a bitter taste in my mouth.

As I embarked on my own business, I felt the weight of the stigma associated with being "hard to deal with." I didn’t want to be viewed as a hassle or a manipulative salesperson.

A Transformative Insight

Recently, during a moment of reflection, I realized that selling and asking are fundamentally different concepts. While selling often implies a power dynamic where one party tries to manipulate the other, asking is rooted in genuine connection and understanding.

The Ask

The Ask represents a sincere attempt to engage and establish rapport. It shifts the focus from a mere transaction to a relationship where both parties can benefit. Your brand deserves to thrive, and inviting potential customers to invest in your offerings should feel collaborative rather than coercive.

When selling transforms into asking, it becomes more about mutual benefit rather than a one-sided exchange.

Four Steps to Effective Asking

  1. Initial Outreach: Start by reaching out to someone you’re familiar with. This initial contact aims to gauge their interest in discussing a potential collaboration. If they’re interested, you can schedule a meeting; if not, that’s perfectly fine.
  2. Engaging Conversation: This stage focuses on listening and understanding the needs and pain points of your potential partner. The aim is to gather insights that will help you craft a tailored offer.
  3. Presenting the Offer: Frame your proposal as an Ask, highlighting how your product or service can address the needs discussed.
  4. Closing the Deal: This final step is where the exchange takes place. Your customer agrees to your terms, leading to a successful transaction.

Embracing the Ask

So far, this approach has yielded positive results for me. While some may view this distinction as trivial or merely semantic, I find it liberating. This shift allows me to move forward without the anxiety of compromising my values.

By embracing the Ask, I’ve found a mindful solution to a challenge that once felt insurmountable.
