Embracing the Unknown: A Pathway to Greater Happiness

Chapter 1: Understanding the Fear of the Unknown
Greetings, Friends,
Recently, my eldest son celebrated his 16th birthday, and we decided to give him some essential tools—a garden shovel, a list of tasks to complete before he can use one of our family cars, and an important discussion about the responsibilities that lie ahead. Unsurprisingly, he was not particularly thrilled; the air was thick with a sense of overwhelm. Part of this stems from a reluctance to abandon his cherished hours of video games and socializing, but a significant part is the anxiety associated with venturing into the unknown. Interestingly, he is far from alone in feeling this way.

In my role as a coach, I've worked with individuals of all ages—children, teenagers, young adults, middle-aged individuals, and seniors. A prevalent theme among them is a profound fear of the unknown. This fear often paralyzes many, stemming from a desire to maintain the status quo and cling to familiarity. Our minds find comfort in predictability. Additionally, there's a fear of transformation, which necessitates letting go of certain aspects of ourselves and our relationships. So, how can we begin to alleviate this fear? Here’s a straightforward three-step approach.
Section 1.1: Identify What You Truly Know
First and foremost, focus on your deep, intrinsic knowledge. This isn't about the information you've gathered in school or the lessons imparted by your parents—what I refer to as "little k" knowledge. Rather, I'm speaking of "Big K" Knowing. Each of you possesses a profound understanding that transcends conventional knowledge, rooted deep within you.
For example, you might recognize that a project requires a shift from an outcome-oriented approach to fostering a space where individuals can cultivate self-trust. Alternatively, you may sense that a relationship has reached its conclusion, despite your reluctance to acknowledge it. Perhaps you feel that a cashier deserves to hear your appreciation. Identify what you know with certainty and connect with that understanding.
Subsection 1.1.1: Practical Application of Your Knowing

Next, it's essential to apply this Knowing in your daily life. As with any skill, practice is critical. Even after years of coaching and training, I continue to learn how to embody my deeper Knowing in practical ways, which can be intimidating. You might find that your newfound understanding challenges your old habits, personal relationships, or societal norms. A simple way to practice is by addressing the situations that arise in your daily life.
For instance, I have an inherent understanding of the importance of connecting with our sensual and sexual selves. Many people harbor fears surrounding this topic, myself included, as we have often been conditioned to overlook our bodies as sources of pleasure. Daily, I encounter questions about the significance of sexual health and exploration, which aligns with my own experiences and training over the years. These inquiries often lead me to step outside my established career path, but I recognize the deep connection and importance of this journey.
Section 1.2: Seek Out Support
Finally, when a sense of Knowing surfaces, I often seek connections with individuals or groups that share similar insights. I've formed bonds with farmers, permaculture educators, natural builders, shamanic practitioners, and holistic healing arts teachers, among others. Discover your own network of support to refine and enhance your Knowing.
By concentrating on your insights, putting them into action, and seeking support, you will soon discover that nurturing your Knowing is essential to overcoming the fear of the unknown.
