Chapter 1: Finding Your Place in Writing
When you embark on your writing journey on Medium, it's common to feel like you're searching for your niche. However, I prefer to think of it as finding your "place."
In my early days on Medium, I focused on sharing my experiences with herbs and herbal health. This passion stemmed from my personal healing journey related to thyroid and adrenal issues, and I wanted to connect with others who might benefit from my story.
Yet, I am more than just that. With a Master's degree in Spiritual Formation, my education signifies a deep-seated passion, not merely a decorative credential. Over time, I've expanded my writing to cover topics like diversity, food, and even poetry, driven by the various interests that resonate with me.
To achieve recognition in any topic, consistency is key. You earn accolades by consistently engaging with your chosen subjects rather than through a single standout piece. This principle also extends to my fiction writing, which, while not yet shared on Medium, allows my characters to grow organically within their narratives.
To excel in writing, my guiding principle is to show up every day. Whether it’s writing, painting, or any other craft, the only path to improvement is through perseverance and dedication. As you continue to write, you’ll gradually notice the subtle improvements that develop over time.
Chapter 1.1: The Journey of Mastery
Renowned photographer Ansel Adams didn't achieve fame overnight. He, too, embraced the philosophy of frequent practice—taking photographs as often as possible. Mastery in any field requires time and effort to discover your identity as a creator.
Finding your place means first uncovering your voice. This transformative process leads to a distinct style emerging in your work. Your unique expression becomes synonymous with your voice.
Your unique style = your voice
Avoid discouragement if your metrics are low initially. Building an audience and refining your style takes time. Embrace the journey of becoming authentic and unafraid to express yourself.
If your endeavors bring you joy and fulfillment, continue pursuing them. With patience and kindness to yourself, you will eventually see progress. Remember, your contributions are significant.
Conversely, if your current pursuits lack joy and meaning, sustaining them will be challenging. Writing for the sake of popularity may yield profit but will ultimately show in the quality of your work.
Find what you truly love to do and allow yourself to thrive!
