Achieving The Good Life: Why Stress Can Hold You Back
Written on
Understanding the Impact of Stress
Stress can be likened to a wolf disguised in sheep's clothing. Most individuals encounter it at various points in their lives, often downplaying its significance:
"Oh, they’re just a bit stressed, that’s all."
But is it really "just that"? Stress is not to be taken lightly. It poses serious risks, hampers productivity, and can even be life-threatening if ignored. Most concerning, it can cloud your judgment, leading to poor decisions.
At its core, poor choices equate to a challenging life, while sound decisions pave the way for a fulfilling existence. It's high time we address stress as a formidable obstacle to living well.
What Does the Good Life Mean to You?
For me, the good life is about the chance to write every day. Writing fuels my passion and purpose. However, when stress levels rise, creativity tends to plummet.
Just last week, my parents visited us in Spain. My father, who is a challenging individual, required constant attention—from meals to travel arrangements. His stress and irritability rubbed off on me, making it difficult to concentrate on writing. The result? Blank pages and frustration.
During that week, I could barely manage to fulfill my basic client obligations, let alone create anything meaningful for Medium. The weight of stress stifled my creativity, work, and overall well-being. And while this stress was temporary, it serves as a reminder that new stressors are always lurking.
Pondering the Perils of Stress
Stress is often regarded as addictive. It releases dopamine and adrenaline—substances that can feel rewarding. A medical professional even stated:
"Cortisol has become the new crack: highly addictive yet flying below the radar of awareness."
Reflecting on my days in retail, I thrived during the hectic Christmas season. Though the adrenaline rush was exhilarating, it often ended in tears due to sheer exhaustion and stress. Yet, I found myself yearning for that chaos again. Like any addiction, breaking free from stress is a messy affair but essential for productivity.
Strategies to Combat Stress
During my father's stay, I sought refuge in my bedroom under the pretense of working. I confided in my husband about my inability to write that day. This exchange highlighted that I, too, grapple with stress.
Here’s what I’m implementing to tackle this challenge:
Acknowledge Stress as a Serious Issue
Ignoring stress is no longer an option. Its toll on both body and mind is alarming: headaches, upset stomachs, high blood pressure, anxiety, and even death. Stress should not be trivialized.
Distance Yourself from Toxic Relationships
Certain individuals in our lives can amplify stress. Whether it’s a demanding boss or a selfish friend, it's vital to evaluate these relationships. Cut ties with those who contribute to your anxiety.
Practice the Power of 'No'
Saying no can be liberating. Whether it’s declining extra work hours or avoiding unappealing social gatherings, protecting your time is crucial for mental health.
Identify Your Stress Relievers
Writing is therapeutic for me, even when I'm stressed. Physical activities like running and walking also help me decompress. Find what works for you and make it a priority.
Embracing a Low-Stress Lifestyle
Stress can hinder your ability to pursue your dreams. The connection is clear: increased stress leads to heightened anxiety, which can spiral into a negative mindset. When in survival mode, contemplating future aspirations becomes nearly impossible.
Although it may sound cliché, the benefits of a low-stress life are vast: more time, energy, and opportunities await.
So, the next time someone brushes off your stress, feel free to express your frustration. Just remember to keep that heart rate in check. Your future self will appreciate it.
