The way we convey our feelings often comes through our actions. Below are several examples illustrating how individuals demonstrate love based on my experiences with clients.
Section 1.1: The Significance of Food
A common theme that arises is the role of food in expressions of affection. For instance, one client shared, "My mother prepares delicious meals and insists I eat well. If I don’t finish my plate, she becomes quite upset and constantly asks, ‘What can I cook for you?’ While this attentiveness is appreciated, I often wished for a different kind of connection. I longed for her to engage with my interests in psychology or to discuss books we've read together. What I truly desired was meaningful conversations, not just a plate of pilaf or a slice of cake!"
Section 1.2: Love Through Actions
Another client expressed her feelings about her husband’s way of showing love: "My husband demonstrates his affection through actions, like fixing things around the house without me asking. He’s very efficient and his friends admire this quality. However, I wish he would connect with me on an emotional level, noticing my feelings without me having to articulate them directly. I dream of a partner who is more sensitive, yet he often seems robotic in his communication."

In a different scenario, a mother described her son’s affectionate nature: "He loves to hug and kiss me; he’s very tactile. But, I often fantasize about doing activities together, like making dumplings or cycling, rather than just receiving physical affection. I yearn for more shared experiences."
In each of these narratives, loved ones express their affection in ways they deem significant. While one might feel hurt or disappointed by the inability of others to meet their emotional needs, it’s crucial to consider whether resentment will actually bring about the desired change.
Chapter 2: Finding Balance in Relationships
Rather than harboring negative feelings, you might choose to embrace the situation as it is. This approach shows respect for your loved ones’ unique ways of expressing love and promotes openness to their feelings. Acceptance is closely linked to self-respect and understanding the perspectives of others.
However, there is a third path—seeking balance in your relationships. This can be achieved by remaining observant and genuinely interested in your loved ones. Ask yourself:
- Are they aware of what you wish to receive from them?
- Have you effectively communicated the significance of your desires?
- What are you currently offering them in return?
- Are you willing to understand their values and reciprocate accordingly?
