The Unvarnished Truth About Running a Solo Business While Employed

Chapter 1: The Struggles of Nighttime Hustling
It's just past midnight on a Sunday, and the air is thick with humidity as I find myself at Abu Dhabi Airport. My body aches; my lower back is tight, and my legs feel numb. The harsh fluorescent lights are blinding, and I can feel a film of dried sweat on my skin. With my connecting flight to Amsterdam delayed for another eight hours, all I want is to catch some sleep.
However, that’s not an option. I’ve just sold my business, and I have a client deliverable due first thing Monday morning. Plus, my tech start-up is on the verge of launching. My inbox is overflowing with emails for my one-person venture, and I also need to brainstorm articles and publish a newsletter. It's that time when grinding becomes a necessity.
Before you criticize, I acknowledge this isn’t a sustainable lifestyle. I don't intend to keep this up indefinitely. But as a guy in his late twenties, unburdened by responsibilities and driven by a passion for business, I can't imagine doing anything else.
Back in 2020, I aspired to become an entrepreneur, feeling trapped in a 9–5 job that no longer fulfilled me. I understand how challenging it is to show up when you despise what you’re doing. So, whenever I feel like throwing in the towel, I remind myself that I’m in a position my former self would have envied.
The first video, "The Ugly Truth of Business | Unfiltered Insights for Entrepreneurs," sheds light on the stark realities of entrepreneurship, emphasizing the challenges that often go unnoticed.
This is the grind I signed up for, so I open my laptop and get to work. Typically, I don’t work past 7:00 p.m., and if I do, it’s for a compelling reason. But now, I’m on a 44-day digital nomad adventure across Europe and Asia, navigating a unique blend of work and travel.
Achieving extraordinary results requires taking extraordinary actions. As Sam Altman puts it, "Extreme people get extreme results."
This is what hard work truly feels like. Balancing a one-person business with travel, while others may be juggling work and children or caring for aging parents, is no easy feat. Life isn’t fair; conditions are rarely perfect.
I might be typing away in an airport, while you could be working in your child’s daycare lobby or at a senior care facility. Sometimes, you find yourself in the zone, while other times, you’re pushing through late nights. It's not glamorous, and I refuse to sugarcoat this reality.
Building a one-person business alongside a full-time job is indeed challenging.
Chapter 2: The Ephemeral Nature of Life
Recently, I spent a week in Singapore with family and friends, realizing that many relatives are facing health challenges as they age. A hospital visit to my uncle, who suffered a severe bacterial infection, was a stark reminder of life’s fragility. If it weren't for my quick-thinking aunt, I might have been attending a funeral instead.
Seeing him lying in that hospital bed made me acutely aware of how fleeting life is. On my train ride back to the hotel, I contemplated how much time people waste living lives they don’t truly want. I promised myself to live in alignment with my values, even if it means disappointing others.
The second video, "Why I Quit My Corporate Job to START My Balloon Event Business [THE UGLY TRUTH]," illustrates the author's journey of leaving a stable job to pursue a passion, highlighting the sacrifices made along the way.
Reflecting on my significant achievements in 2023—from purchasing a house to selling my business and repairing important relationships—I recognized a consistent theme: the most meaningful milestones were the ones that required the greatest sacrifices.
Material possessions quickly lose their value, but the things you earn through hard work are priceless. Although the current grind feels taxing, I know that in a few years, I will look back with immense pride at what I’ve accomplished.
Here I am, sitting on an uncomfortable chair in a random café at Abu Dhabi Airport. It’s not glamorous, nor is it exciting, but this is the work that shapes my dream life. How many people can genuinely say that? Most importantly, I'm proving to myself that I follow through on my commitments.
Should you embark on a similar journey? Perhaps not. But for me, I am right where I need to be.
