The Simplified Approach to Step 3 of Alcoholics Anonymous

Understanding the Third Step
Have you ever found yourself at a crossroads, unsure of which prayer to recite or which step to take? This was a common struggle for me. Whenever someone suggested, "Just recite The Serenity Prayer," I would freeze and draw a blank! Similarly, when prompted to say the Third Step Prayer, I was at a loss.
When I first joined Alcoholics Anonymous, I often felt overwhelmed and unable to respond appropriately in those moments. I resorted to my instincts instead of the guidance offered.
At times, I questioned whether AA was the right path for me. In moments of indecision, I rarely thought about God or prayer.
Upon sharing these feelings with others, I was encouraged to try a more straightforward approach to the Third Step. They advised, "Simply say, 'God, help me,' and take a step back to let Him work."
This required me to fully surrender my will and my life to a Higher Power. The concept of surrendering was foreign to me—I had never considered yielding to anyone or anything. However, by entrusting my life to God, I was indeed making that surrender.
Once I made this commitment, I realized I could not reclaim any part of my life, no matter how small it seemed.
This new approach felt achievable. After all, hadn’t I previously pleaded, "God, help me out of this, and I promise not to repeat it"? Although it was a false promise, it revealed that I had sought divine assistance more often than I recognized.
I had been conditioned to believe that God would punish me, which made me hesitant to seek help. However, reflecting on the notion that God is a forgiving and healing presence was incredibly reassuring. In fact, much of what I experienced—what I heard, saw, and felt—brought me comfort.
When I relinquished control and allowed God to guide me, my life began to improve. Thank you, God!
