# When Is the Right Time to Engage a Consultant for Business Growth?
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding the Need for Consultants
Many individuals and businesses struggle to gain clarity about their goals and strategies. They often seek that elusive, high-performing consultant or coach lurking in the depths of the internet to help them unravel their complexities. Sound familiar? You’re not alone.
However, here's a harsh reality: no one can truly understand you or your business better than you can. There’s no magic solution that will instantly transform your personal life or your business. Both are deeply personal journeys.
Section 1.1: When You Should Avoid Hiring a Consultant
As someone who operates a solo consulting practice, I can tell you what strategies work and which ones don’t. So, should you resist the temptation to hire a consultant? Yes, especially when you find yourself uncertain about your direction.
Imagine someone standing at a crossroads, unable to choose between Path A and Path B. Without a clear destination, every option appears identical.
In the words of Lewis Carroll's Cheshire Cat: "Where should I go?" - Alice. "That depends on where you want to end up."
If you’re unsure of your direction, it’s best to steer clear of consultants. Ignore LinkedIn messages from coaches and hold onto your finances tightly.
Section 1.2: Recognizing When to Seek a Consultant
The right time to look for a consultant is when you feel lost. Being lost, however, is different from being indecisive. When you know your destination but lack a clear path to get there, that’s when a consultant can help.
Imagine you’re lost in a dense jungle, aiming to reach a base camp before nightfall. You need someone with experience—a pathfinder—who possesses the right tools and skills to navigate the terrain.
Consultants serve as those pathfinders. Equipped with expertise and industry insights, we can guide you toward your goals. But remember, it’s essential for you to define those goals first.
Chapter 2: The Dynamics of Client-Consultant Relationships
Annoying Clients Often Rely Too Heavily on Consultants
It’s baffling to me how some clients deflect decision-making responsibilities onto their consultants. Business owners must take charge of their own decisions. While I’m here to offer guidance, questions that lack clarity can be perplexing.
For example:
Client: Should we aim for a revenue target ten times higher than last year?
Me: That’s an intriguing thought. What’s driving this 10x target?
Client: I’m not sure. What do you think?
Consultants aren’t equipped to make such broad declarations without context. If you keep asking, “Do you think we should…?” I’ll keep probing for your rationale.
What sorts of questions should you be asking instead?
Thoughtful Client: Aldric, how can we achieve our goal of 10x revenue growth this year?
Me: Is that a realistic target?
Thoughtful Client: We reached 8x last year and believe it’s feasible if we analyze our client profiles more closely. What are your thoughts?
Me: We’re on the right track. Streamlining operations could be beneficial. Let’s dive into that.
The distinction is clear. Consultants provide significant value when clients approach us with specific objectives, helping to reach or even surpass those targets.
Parting Thoughts: The Right Timing for Consultant Engagement
There’s an appropriate time for a consultant to come in and elevate your business. Think of us as magnifying glasses or levers—your leverage.
But leverage has a critical limitation: it can’t work effectively on zero.
For example:
- 0 multiplied by 10 = 0
- 0 multiplied by 100 = 0
You need to have direction and must already be making progress in your business or personal growth. This way, you can provide data points and feedback for us to analyze, ultimately helping you improve.
Consultants can be costly, so it’s essential to make the most of our time, experience, and services to reap the benefits.
