Rediscovering Joy: 10 Habits to Embrace Happiness This Year

Chapter 1: The Quest for Joy
As we approach the latter half of the year, I trust your 2023 is meeting your hopes and dreams. Last year, 2022, was less than stellar for many of us, filled with unmet expectations and challenges.
If you found 2022 particularly tough, rest assured you were not alone. After enduring lengthy lockdowns—four years for me—we all longed for a return to 'normalcy.' However, the first part of this year may still feel like a continuation of that struggle. Many of us are simply drained and need time to recover from such experiences.
The simple pleasures we once took for granted appear to have vanished. I have spent a considerable amount of time over the past year searching for that lost joy and discovering ways to reintroduce it into my life. Here, I share ten practices I’ve experimented with and adopted to restore joy.
The 10 Habits for Enhanced Joy
- Cultivate Daily Gratitude: Initially, my outlook on life was quite bleak. I often felt overwhelmed by negativity. However, I decided to challenge that perspective. Starting each day with a list of things I am grateful for transformed my mindset. I began with three items, then increased it to ten, and now I often find myself listing 12 to 15 things that bring me joy. This simple practice can truly make a difference.
- Prioritize Joyful Activities: Ensure you carve out time for activities that make you happy, whether it's connecting with loved ones, pursuing a hobby, or volunteering. I enrolled in an acrylic painting class—something I never thought I would do. Each session, though challenging, resulted in creations I surprisingly appreciated. Scheduling these activities is crucial; otherwise, they may never happen.
- Journal to Process Emotions: Negative thoughts are a natural part of life, but dwelling on them can be detrimental. I found that writing down my feelings helped to release them. Initially, it was overwhelming, but over time, the weight of those emotions lessened. If journaling isn't appealing, consider alternatives like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), meditation, or physical activities to help manage your thoughts.
- Prioritize Sleep: Sleep is often overlooked but is essential for overall well-being. After a life-altering experience five years ago, I realized that quality sleep must be prioritized. I aim for 7 to 8 hours nightly, and I understand what good sleep looks like for me. Nutrition and physical activity also play significant roles in my sleep quality. Remember, lack of sleep can hinder your ability to experience joy.
- Embrace New Experiences: Trying new things adds excitement to life. Schedule these adventures to give yourself something to anticipate. I recently made Indian butter chicken from scratch; the experience was intricate, but the joy I felt during the process was worth it.
- Connect with Nature: Spending time outdoors positively influences mental health. Whether it's a park, beach, or forest, immerse yourself in the environment. Pay attention to the colors, scents, and sounds around you. Disconnecting from technology enhances this experience. For me, the ocean is a sanctuary that rejuvenates my spirit.
- Engage in Kindness: Acts of kindness, no matter how small, can significantly uplift your mood. Simple gestures like holding the door open or complimenting someone can create a ripple effect of positivity. Helping others reinforces a sense of purpose and joy in your own life.
- Step Outside Your Comfort Zone: Growth often comes from tackling challenges. In my painting class, I pushed myself to create a human portrait—far outside my comfort zone. The process was difficult, but the end result was surprisingly rewarding. Embrace challenges; you may discover new strengths.
- Mindfully Enjoy Meals: Reflect on your last meal—were you distracted by your phone or television? Eating mindfully, without distractions, enhances your enjoyment of food. Engaging fully in the experience can lead to greater satisfaction and may help regulate your appetite.
- Nurture Close Relationships: Strong relationships contribute significantly to happiness and longevity. Whether it's family, friends, or partners, invest in these connections. The research indicates that a happy relationship at 50 can lead to better health at 80. Make an effort to maintain and cherish these bonds.
I wish you all the best on your journey to rediscover joy.
