Navigating Job Loss: Lessons on Money and Personal Growth
Written on
Chapter 1: A Shocking Revelation
“Michael, I've just lost my job,” my friend announced, leaving me with a sense of unease, as I had played a role in securing his position. He had been there for only six months and walked into his probation review anticipating positive feedback, only to be caught off guard.
He was met by both his hiring manager and the Director of HR, and we all know how that story unfolds. Here’s what his situation taught me.
Section 1.1: The Perils of Sole Dependence
One crucial lesson emerged from this: never put all your faith in a single 9-to-5 job.
From an early age, I’ve understood the risks associated with relying on just one income source. I’ve utilized the internet to cultivate a personal brand, allowing me to establish multiple independent streams of income. This way, if one evaporates, the others remain unaffected.
My friend, however, has never embraced this philosophy. His reliance on a full-time job has left him vulnerable, and he struggles to go more than a few weeks without work. Lacking confidence, he has yet to earn more than $80,000 AUD in his career.
His experience has reinforced my commitment to diversifying my income streams. While I hold a significant equity position and a solid salary in my 9-to-5 job, I am also developing an online business in my spare time—a fact I have been transparent about with my employer as it was part of my acquisition agreement.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Importance of Skills
All industries value a mix of skills, such as:
- Sales
- Funnels
- Marketing
- Communication
- Content Creation
- Business Development
These essential skills are timeless.
Combining your industry-specific expertise with these skills can significantly enhance your value. This is the direction I’m heading; I possess extensive knowledge of government policy along with competencies in the areas listed above. While I don’t aim to be world-class, I strive to reach the top 25%, which can be achieved with about 20 hours of focused learning.
It's the synergy of skills that adds value, emphasizing breadth over depth.
Section 1.2: Cultivating a Personal Brand
I firmly believe that establishing a personal brand is a pivotal investment, especially as we transition further into the digital age.
Your personal brand encompasses your values, beliefs, interests, curiosities, knowledge, and experiences—all presented in an accessible way. It represents your unique identity; if you find yourself in competition with others, it may indicate that your brand isn’t distinct enough.
To begin building your personal brand, consider:
- Posting 2–3 times a week
- Starting an email list
- Publishing a weekly newsletter
- Hosting a community group
You don't need anyone's approval to get started; just take the leap.
Chapter 2: Unseen Opportunities
Many opportunities remain unpublicized.
Since launching my personal brand, numerous doors have opened—opportunities I once deemed beyond reach. I have spoken on international platforms in places like Amsterdam and Nepal, met remarkable individuals, and secured high-value clients.
Your network is no longer simply your net worth; it’s more about who is aware of you than who you are. I've encountered situations where unfamiliar faces recognize me from my LinkedIn or Medium posts, recalling stories I’ve shared.
When someone is already familiar with you, a significant portion of the challenge is already surmounted.
I frequently receive unexpected messages and emails presenting opportunities that align with my skills and interests. You can’t foresee who is engaging with your content.
While I can only network one-on-one with a limited number of people, my personal brand serves as a limitless magnet, attracting opportunities and individuals that resonate with my values and mission.
Your personal brand is your entry pass to an exclusive club.
Section 2.1: A Cautionary Tale
My friend's recent experience should serve as a wake-up call for us all.
I refuse to find myself in a similar predicament in my middle age, and I believe you share that sentiment.
So, consider these strategies:
- Create diverse and independent online income streams.
- Focus on developing a broad skill set rather than a narrow one.
- Dedicate time and energy to nurturing your personal brand.
- Use your brand as a magnet for opportunities.
While this path may be challenging, it pales in comparison to the difficulty of losing your job at 50 with limited options.
