As Bill Maher insightfully remarked, “new is not synonymous with better.” If we let technology make history, truth, and liberty irrelevant, we risk losing our humanity in the process. While technological advancements often bring numerous benefits, it is crucial to acknowledge their potential downsides. Ignoring these risks could lead us to an uncritical dependence on technological growth, a scenario that may already be unfolding. This piece aims to advocate for the idea that our past experiences should inform our future endeavors.
Indeed, this notion might bring about a few gray hairs, but the trend of sidelining years of human experience in favor of relentless technological progress is alarming. Recognizing the rich human experiences from a time before smartphones can serve as a crucial resource for future generations, guiding them toward a more positive technological landscape.
Furthermore, it’s imperative to recognize the dual nature of humanity, particularly in light of current global tensions and the stark political divides in the United States. History shows that despite our advancements, we have yet to evolve beyond our darker instincts. With each technological innovation comes the potential for misuse. We must not delude ourselves into believing that AI, or any subsequent development, will escape ethical challenges. Human involvement is inevitable, and we are far from infallible.
My aspiration is to shed light on the importance of integrating authentic human experiences—those of connection with ourselves, our communities, our environment, and, for some, a higher power—into the technological advancements we pursue.
