Harnessing the Power of Time Blocking for Your Side Hustle

This year, I embarked on a side hustle by sharing my insights on Medium. I would like to share a method that has been crucial in helping me stay aligned with my aspirations.

One of the most underestimated strategies for daily productivity is time blocking. Time is our most precious resource, and every moment that passes can never be reclaimed. The Stoics remind us to be mindful of time’s value and to utilize it judiciously.
Since April, I've been dedicated to writing consistently on Medium. Initially, I aimed to publish daily, but this gradually evolved into a few times a week. A month ago, I noticed a significant drop in my output, and at one point, I was only posting weekly. My commitments to my Chartership, work, and tennis took priority, leading to this decline. To combat this, I adopted a new approach that I had also started implementing at work: time blocking throughout my day. This strategy allows me to allocate specific periods for tasks, enhancing my focus and providing structure to my daily routine, ultimately improving my self-discipline.
A couple of weeks ago, I realized my Medium writing had started to falter again, so I added it to my out-of-office tasks as follows:
- Medium writing — Mondays & Wednesdays 8:00–9:00 PM and Saturday mornings 10:00–11:00 AM.
- Chartership — Tuesdays & Thursdays 8:00–9:00 PM and Sunday evenings 7:00–9:00 PM.
These tasks are all scheduled in my iPhone calendar with reminders set for 15 minutes prior. It’s remarkable how changing your environment and establishing controls can nurture positive habits over time.

Establishing realistic objectives for your side hustles and recording them on a visible whiteboard serves as a daily reminder of the importance of time blocking. By maintaining consistency, demonstrating perseverance, and fostering a positive mindset, you can effectively achieve your goals through this technique, thereby embedding beneficial habits into your daily life.
