Finding Joy in the Hospital: A Unique Perspective on Healthcare

Chapter 1: The Search for Joy in Healthcare
Where does joy originate in a hospital setting?
In recent days, I’ve been making frequent visits to a nearby comprehensive hospital known for its orthopedic specialization. This was prompted by persistent discomfort in my wrist, likely due to inflammation. Throughout this time, I’ve explored nearly every corner of the hospital, from outpatient services to imaging departments like X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, as well as the pharmacy and billing areas. However, I couldn't help but notice an unusual atmosphere.
Reflecting on my past experiences, if a child fell ill, our usual choice would be a maternity and child health facility, tailored for young patients and expectant mothers. Conversely, adults typically seek care at the nearest comprehensive hospital, as they offer a wide range of medical services covering both internal and surgical specialties. Most of these contemporary hospitals boast modern aesthetics, bright lighting, and corridors adorned with advertisements showcasing their facilities and expert profiles, which instill confidence in the patients.
In stark contrast, this hospital carries a rich history, and its interior design appears to have been untouched since it was built four decades ago. The walls are stark, and the lighting is cool-toned, creating a rather somber ambiance. The corridors are lined with large trees that extend through the floors, resulting in fallen leaves scattered about, contributing to a somewhat desolate atmosphere. The majority of patients here seek treatment for orthopedic issues that hinder mobility, with many being elderly individuals. As people age, the risk of falls and subsequent fractures increases significantly.
My decision to attend this orthopedic facility stems from its historical significance. In its earlier days, the hospital invested in numerous diagnostic tools to enhance the evaluation of orthopedic injuries. Therefore, in today’s context of limited medical resources, it’s possible to complete CT scans and MRIs within just a few hours.
What working individuals often lack the most is time, closely followed by health.
