Monthly Review: A Farmer's Perspective on Current Issues
Written on
Overview of the Monthly Review
Dear readers,
This year, I've embarked on a journey to provide a monthly summary of my work, and there's no better time to start than mid-year. Well, perhaps January would have been suitable too, but here we are.
My objectives for this initiative are threefold. Primarily, it serves as a personal challenge to enhance my writing frequency (self-serving, I admit). I do not consider myself a prolific author, typically managing to publish one or two articles each month. This endeavor is a way to keep me motivated and to write more consistently.
Secondly, this format allows me to express my reflections on my work. Since I often write in a news article style, my pieces can come off as detached. While I prefer this approach—allowing the story to convey its own message—I feel it's crucial to share my perspectives with you, the readers. Although I've occasionally included “Author’s notes” at the end of my articles, they haven't resonated as I'd hoped. Thus, I’m trying something new with this monthly review.
Lastly, these summaries will serve as a testing ground for a future newsletter I aim to launch. Consider this an experiment in progress.
With that introduction, I welcome you to my first monthly summary!
Recent Articles
I've recently authored a two-part series on the farmer protests that erupted across Europe. This topic piqued my interest due to its portrayal in the media. It appeared as though farmers were opposing environmental regulations; however, a deeper dive revealed a more complex reality.
In my view, the core issue driving these protests is their dwindling income. Adding to this is the fact that farmers are among the most susceptible to the impacts of climate change, making the prevailing narrative misleading. Thus, I titled my first article “Farmers vs. Climate — A Misconception”.
This article was published on The Environment on June 24th and received notable attention within just four days!
Farmers vs. Climate — A Misconception
Farmers are not opposed to climate initiatives; they are advocating for fair wages.
For my subsequent article, I focused on how corporate profits are exacerbating inflation in Europe, which contributes to farmers losing purchasing power. The premise here is that while policymakers quickly rollback environmental regulations for farmers, they neglect to tackle inflation driven by corporate greed.
Regrettably, due to the complexity of this topic, the piece veered into an extensive discussion on inflation, limiting the space for other critical aspects. Although it may not be my finest work, I take pride in the research involved. If you want to delve into the concept of “greedflation,” I encourage you to check it out.
The Environment Suffering from Greedflation
When corporate profits drive inflation, the environment bears the consequences.
Current Research Endeavors
Currently, I am investigating the recent mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where a new strain has surfaced. It seems that mpox has transitioned from being a neglected disease to an international headline and back to obscurity. However, this neglect will not last if we fail to combat it effectively in endemic regions.
This will mark my fifth article on mpox, and it’s gratifying to witness the accumulation of my work over the years. For those interested in my previous articles, I have compiled a list below.
How serious is it? In under 5 min.
