Chapter 1: The Core of Authentic Masculinity
Each fortnight, I distribute the Authentic Man 5–3–1 Newsletter, aiming to guide men towards a more genuine and fulfilling existence. This newsletter includes 5 Minutes | 3 Insights, Quotes, and Questions | 1 Challenge.
1 IDEA
Authenticity in masculinity is anchored in adhering to your own principles.
A man's most valuable possession should be his personal code of ethics. Without defined principles and values, you may find yourself adrift, tossed about by life’s challenges like a hapless bird in a storm. Lacking an anchor makes it difficult to navigate life confidently, as you can’t rely on yourself to uphold your commitments. This leads to a loss of respect from others and ultimately, to self-betrayal when faced with tough choices.
Unless you have trustworthy friends to hold you accountable, you alone bear the responsibility for your actions. There are days when I lack the motivation to work out or face my responsibilities. There have been countless moments when I’ve felt like giving up. Yet, I’ve established my own rules and cannot betray the most significant person in my life — myself.
You might be tempted to skip the gym, hit the snooze button, or take shortcuts that conflict with your promises. However, such self-betrayal is the antithesis of true masculinity. Imagine the strength of character you'd possess if you remained steadfast to your commitments, regardless of the obstacles you encounter.
You would become unyielding, able to rest each night with satisfaction, knowing you acted with integrity. Living authentically fosters immense confidence, fulfillment, and inner tranquility.
Masculinity involves clarity of your personal code of conduct and the resolve to adhere to it, even when faced with challenges.
1 QUOTE
“I’m not interested in whether the glass is half empty or half full. I’m interested in figuring out how to fill the glass.”
— Donald Kaberuka
Your circumstances are less significant than how you choose to respond to them.
Everyone experiences difficulties at some point, whether in their career, relationships, or business ventures. You can either dwell on your misfortunes or accept them as they are.
Complaining is a futile endeavor, draining your time and energy. Instead, embrace your reality without resistance and focus on what can be improved. Life may not be fair, but making the most of your current situation is within your control.
Consider these reflective questions:
- What aspects of this situation can I control, and what can’t I?
- What do I resist, and how would my actions change if I accepted it?
- What small step can I take to enhance my circumstances?
It’s irrelevant whether the glass is half-full or half-empty; what matters is finding a way to fill it.
1 QUESTION
Why do you find it necessary to lie?
Even the most honest individuals tell lies from time to time, and that’s perfectly normal.
For instance:
- “I never had a problem with this car.”
- “I’d love to join your party!”
- “You look fantastic in that dress.”
People lie for two primary reasons: either to evade confrontation or to gain something. This makes the question of why we lie particularly revealing, as it exposes what we value enough to mislead others.
I often struggle to be honest about my well-being. When asked how I’m doing, my default response is usually “I’m fine,” which rarely reflects my true feelings. The reluctance to face uncomfortable truths often leads to this behavior, as I aim to avoid being perceived as burdensome or dramatic.
Next time you catch yourself in a lie, reflect on your motivations. Perhaps it’s to avoid conflict, for personal benefit, or a pattern ingrained in you since childhood. Understanding your reasons can lead to greater self-awareness.
THE CHALLENGE
Eliminate one negative habit.
Bad habits resemble a cozy bed — easy to fall into, yet challenging to escape.
Scrolling through your phone mindlessly, smoking, staying up too late, or skipping workouts are all examples of habits that drain your energy and diminish your quality of life. For instance, spending just half an hour daily on your phone equals around 180 hours, or nearly eight full days, of lost potential each year.
If you’ve been seeking a sign to abandon a long-held bad habit, consider this your wake-up call. Here are some actionable strategies to facilitate your success:
Disrupt Your Environment
Like a tree with deep roots, bad habits can be tough to uproot. However, what if you cut off their source of nourishment?
Your surroundings greatly influence your actions, so make positive changes. Hide unhealthy snacks, uninstall distracting apps, place your alarm clock out of reach, or turn your couch away from the TV. Small adjustments can yield significant changes.
Allow Yourself a Slip
The all-or-nothing approach rarely succeeds.
While radical change is often glorified in films, the reality is that it can undermine your progress. If you slip up, don’t be too hard on yourself. Remember, perfection is unattainable, and progress — no matter how small — is still valuable.
Observe and Release the Urge
Sometimes, simply enduring a moment of discomfort is all it takes to break a habit.
When faced with a trigger for your bad habit, like seeing a box of cookies, allow yourself to feel the craving without acting on it. Set a timer for one minute and embrace the emotion. You’ll likely find that many urges dissipate on their own, allowing you to make better choices.
Wishing you all the best on your journey!
Until next time,
Moreno
