# Embracing Self-Acceptance: A Better Path than Self-Esteem

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Self-Esteem Movement

Since the late 1960s, a notable trend has emerged in psychological discussions, one that has significantly influenced societal attitudes. This trend is known as the "Self-Esteem Movement," which began with Nathaniel Branden's 1969 paper, "The Psychology of Self-Esteem." In this influential work, Branden posits that high self-esteem is crucial for achieving success and feeling valued. Conversely, he suggests that low self-esteem contributes to numerous personal and social issues.

A significant outcome of this movement has been the messaging directed towards individuals, particularly children, that they are inherently special, regardless of their actions or achievements. This notion has led to practices like participation awards in schools, where the competitive spirit is diminished in favor of universal acknowledgment. In such scenarios, both top performers and those who struggle receive equal recognition.

It's worth noting that many respected psychologists critique this movement, arguing it fosters a generation of entitled individuals with narcissistic tendencies, who perceive themselves as valuable without regard for context.

Section 1.1: The Flaws of the Self-Esteem Approach

Even as a life coach rather than a psychologist, I recognize the shortcomings of the self-esteem philosophy. Teaching individuals that they are always valuable ignores the reality that everyone experiences moments of feeling inadequate. No amount of self-esteem training can erase the truth that feelings of worthlessness can arise in various situations.

This mindset often leads to an internal battle where the logical self, shaped by upbringing, conflicts with emotional responses that evoke feelings of inadequacy. Consequently, individuals may feel compelled to suppress these emotions rather than confront and process them healthily. This suppression can manifest as narcissistic behavior, where validation from external sources becomes essential to counteract feelings of worthlessness.

Another subtle downside of the participation award mentality is that it diminishes the sense of achievement for those who genuinely excel. If everyone is considered a winner, the motivation to strive for excellence can be lost.

Chapter 2: The Power of Self-Acceptance

Fortunately, there exists a third option that liberates individuals from both low self-esteem and the misguided pursuit of inflated self-esteem: self-acceptance. Many confuse self-acceptance with self-esteem, but they represent distinct approaches to self-perception.

When one seeks self-esteem, the focus often shifts to proving one's worth. In contrast, self-acceptance fosters a sense of peace with oneself, acknowledging that feelings of worthlessness are natural and transient. Instead of battling these emotions, one learns to coexist with them, facilitating quicker emotional processing.

Everyone has undesirable traits, and self-acceptance involves recognizing and embracing these aspects without letting them define one's identity. Individuals who practice self-acceptance tend to focus more on others and their surroundings, as they find contentment within themselves.

On the other hand, those fixated on self-esteem often feel the need to boast or showcase their worth to others, as external validation serves as a temporary escape from feelings of inadequacy.

Section 2.1: The Myth of Self-Acceptance and Improvement

A conversation with an acquaintance left me pondering whether self-acceptance could hinder personal growth. She questioned whether accepting ourselves as we are would lead to complacency. This perspective raised an interesting point; however, my friend later clarified that acceptance and improvement can coexist.

For instance, if I sustain an injury, I can acknowledge its reality while still seeking to treat it. Similarly, recognizing areas for improvement within ourselves doesn’t negate our acceptance of those parts. The key lies in understanding that self-acceptance allows for growth without the need to deny our current state.

Ultimately, self-acceptance does not equate to a lack of ambition. Instead, it provides a foundation from which one can pursue meaningful changes and enhancements in their life.
