Crafting Your Most Fulfilling Year: A 6-Step Life Design Guide

Chapter 1: Embracing Life Design for a New Year
As we approach the end of the year, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on the past twelve months and consider the opportunities awaiting us. However, the path of New Year’s resolutions often hits a familiar hurdle—the dreaded slump. According to Forbes, over 60% of these ambitious resolutions are left behind within just three months.
Resolutions typically revolve around habits and objectives, but they frequently lack specificity. For example, vague goals like "get fit," "lose weight," or "manage finances" aren’t actionable enough. How will you measure success? What specific targets will you set, such as saving X amount of dollars or shedding Y kilograms?
Books like Atomic Habits suggest aligning your goals with your identity. But how can you accomplish that? This year, I discovered a valuable resource: Designing Your Life, a #1 New York Times bestseller by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans. In this article, I’ll outline the essential insights from the book and what I gleaned from it.
The 6 Steps of "Designing Your Life"
Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, both creative thinkers and Stanford professors, developed the "Designing Your Life" method initially for their students. This approach empowers individuals to create a fulfilling life and career path. Utilizing their design expertise, they incorporate strategies such as reflection, journaling, and prototyping into a comprehensive six-step process.
- Create a Work/Play/Love/Health Dashboard
Understanding your current situation is crucial to determining your future direction. One effective method is to create a Work/Play/Love/Health Dashboard:
- Work: Assess your current work situation, including employment, studying, or side projects. Are you satisfied, and what would you like to change?
- Play: Identify activities that bring you joy. How do you define play, and do you make enough time for it?
- Love: Reflect on your relationships, not just romantic ones but friendships as well. How fulfilling are they?
- Health: Evaluate your physical and mental health. Are you stressed? Are you exercising enough?
Rate your fulfillment in each category from 0% to 100%. Visualizing these results can help you identify areas for improvement.
- Craft Your Workview and Lifeview
After assessing your current situation, it’s time to envision your future with two perspectives: one for your work and another for your overall life. This involves four key steps:
- Write a brief reflection on your work philosophy (about 250 words).
- Write a brief reflection on your life philosophy (also about 250 words).
- Compare the two views: do they complement or conflict with one another?
- Adjust them to ensure alignment.
Congratulations! You’ve just created your personal compass, guiding you in making significant decisions.
- Practice Good Time Journaling
To create a fulfilling life, focus on two vital aspects: energy and engagement. Good Time Journaling allows you to track activities that energize you versus those that drain you.
Over three weeks, log your daily activities, noting engagement levels and whether you experienced a state of flow. At the end of each week, reflect on which activities are uplifting and which are not. This process will help identify actions to enhance your happiness.
- Utilize Mind Mapping
Mind mapping is a powerful tool for stimulating creativity and can help you explore alternative life paths. Here’s how to apply it:
- Identify activities from your Good Time Journal where you felt engaged and energized.
- Choose three such activities and create a mind map for each.
- Highlight three key insights from the outer rings of your maps to develop a job description.
- Develop Your Odyssey Plans
Now it’s time to design your Odyssey Plans, which are five-year roadmaps outlining your goals. Each plan should include:
- Resources: Skills, money, time, and contacts.
- Likability: Your enthusiasm for the plan.
- Confidence: Your belief in your ability to achieve it.
- Coherence: Consistency with your Workview and Lifeview.
Create three distinct plans to maximize creativity, ensuring they vary significantly.
- Engage in Prototyping
With your plans in hand, it’s time to prototype. Rather than making drastic changes, start small. Engage in "prototype interviews" with people currently in roles you aspire to. This informal conversation will provide valuable insights into their experiences and may even lead to potential job offers.
Thank you for reading! Personally, Life Design has become an actionable framework that highlights activities that energize and excite me, serving as a guide to amplify their presence in my life.
