Crafting Your Book: Strategies for Busy Authors

Written on

Chapter 1: Finding Your Writing Space

It took me four years of dedicating just ten minutes each day to complete my memoir, drawing from transformative experiences in the UK prison system. While that might not be entirely accurate, it reflects the strategy I used during particularly hectic times. After all, who genuinely has the time to write a book?

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Everyone has a book within them”? Have you always desired to write but felt unsure of where to begin? Perhaps you believe you lack the necessary time.

This article won’t delve into the intricacies of refining your craft or how to outline your book. As a transformational coach rather than a writing instructor, I simply wish to share the actionable steps I took to write my books, especially when my available time was limited.

Years ago, my knowledge of creative writing and the publishing industry was minimal. I had already established a non-profit organization and led a business pioneering a new well-being approach in the UK prison system, making a significant impact. My speaking engagements took me around the globe, and I became a thought leader sought after by others wanting to replicate my social enterprise.

Although I occasionally blogged and had numerous diary entries about my work, I never saw myself as a writer, nor did I plan to write a memoir. Nevertheless, after speaking events, I frequently encountered inquiries about when my book would be released. This prompted me to consider, “Maybe I should pen a book.”

Starting from scratch, my journey was gradual, filled with lessons learned along the way. However, I discovered effective strategies that can help you embark on your writing journey.

Before we proceed, a note: the following strategies proved beneficial for me. Many other insights exist from various sources, so I encourage you to select ideas that resonate with you, experiment with them, and adapt your approach as necessary.

1. Create a Dedicated Space

Establishing a designated writing space is crucial.

When you carve out time for something—no matter how brief, such as ten minutes daily—you signal to yourself that this endeavor is significant. Whether it's writing, exercising, pursuing a hobby, or practicing self-care, I found that treating my writing time as sacred led to increased productivity.

In her book, Writing Down the Bones, Natalie Goldberg likens the practice of creating space for writing to other forms of Zen practice, supported by “...two thousand years of studying the mind.”

There were periods when ten minutes was all I could manage, but I organized myself to make it work, leading to substantial productivity during those short sessions.

2. Take Inspired Steps

Inspired actions are small, manageable steps that pave the way for larger achievements.

In my Inspired Action programs, I guide individuals to identify the tiniest steps they can take toward their aspirations. BJ Fogg, the architect of the Tiny Habits method, emphasizes the significance of starting small to establish new habits.

My limited writing time compelled me to set granular goals. Instead of aiming to “write a chapter,” I would specify tasks like “define the protagonist” or “draft an outline for chapter six.”

At the start of each session, I ensured I had a clear inspired action in mind, preventing me from feeling lost during my ten-minute writing blocks. I maintained a checklist of these small tasks, and seeing completed items encouraged me, particularly when I felt overwhelmed.

3. Seek Community Support

Writing can often feel isolating, especially when you have limited time to dedicate to it. But you don't have to navigate this path alone.

Consider joining a writing group or participating in workshops to connect with fellow writers and receive constructive feedback. This interaction not only enhances your writing skills but also combats the negative self-talk that many writers face.

I enrolled in a writing class led by Jules Swales, attending every Friday night for eight weeks. My writing improved drastically, my hesitation about sharing my work faded, and the feedback I received was invaluable. This class became a cornerstone of my development, and I continue to participate in at least one of Jules’ classes annually.

The class fostered a supportive network among a small group of women, resulting in one member launching an indie publishing press and another securing a book deal with a major publisher. I, too, contributed to two published anthologies.

You may wonder, “How can one accomplish this in just ten minutes a day?” Naturally, I didn’t achieve everything in that time. However, dedicating short periods daily yielded insights that propelled me forward.

4. Celebrate Your Achievements

Taking time to acknowledge your accomplishments is vital for motivation.

If you're like me, you might be inclined to focus on what you haven’t achieved instead of celebrating your successes. The day after the launch party for my first book in 2021, my husband reminded me, “Aren’t you now a published author?” His pride was evident.

Caught up in the whirlwind of subsequent tasks, I hadn’t taken a moment to savor this significant milestone. Although I couldn’t retire on the earnings (which I donated to charity), I realized the importance of pausing to appreciate my achievement.

Celebrating your wins, no matter how small, provides a boost of motivation that enhances performance. I encourage you to reflect on your day each evening and recognize your successes.

Summary

The goal is to develop a system tailored to your needs. You might begin with these foundational steps:

  1. Identify a regular time and space for writing.
  2. Take inspired actions that lead toward your objectives.
  3. Find a community to share in the journey.
  4. Celebrate every success, no matter how minor.

Above all, remember to enjoy the process!
